Merbabe Scarf Design

Merbabes started from #inktober2015 and became a series of voluptuous merpeople motifs inspired by the subversive hashtags such as #bodypositive, #effyourbeautystandards, and #ironfat.

The problem space I tackled for this piece is capturing the body positive spirit of the original Merbabes that I drew in 2015 in a way that is functional and flatters the wearer who enjoys that message, rather than just to be observed by the viewer. It is important that the body positive message is not overt due to the stigma that can surround the movement too. The scarf design consists of four different merpeople with various different body types, genders, and races; each merbabe is surrounded by lilies in classical repose.
